Should You Watch It?

Watch it as the ruins arc’s briefing. Travel and planning, not the dragon yet. If you skip, Episode 81’s city-under-the-cave has less setup. Glenda’s Blood Shadow warning is the new faction name you want. Fine as a table episode. The “groundwork” is literal.

Beginner-friendly? No as a start point. Watch from Season 1 Episode 1. This installment assumes you already know Tempest’s core cast — Rimuru at minimum.

Bottom line: sequential viewers should not skip “The Groundwork of Greed.” Fight-only watchers may feel the talkier stretches; nation-building fans will not.

Story Recap

Two rooms, one ruin

Yuuki agrees with Maribel. Johann thinks Glenda is dead by Rimuru’s hand. Yuuki wants Amrita in Distave — Clayman’s old land — because of a reactor. Maribel wants the fight there even with Milim present. Yuuki has something of Milim’s to return, a wedge to split her off Rimuru. He warns about Veldora. Maribel does not care. The trap is a field trip with a legendary weapon in the basement. Treat the reactor as their goal, not a confirmed on-screen nuke.

Glenda’s new job

Rimuru builds a reception hall. Glenda now works for Souei. Over food she maps Five Elders, Maribel, Gaban, Johann, and Blood Shadow. Rimuru sends Souei at the Rossos and takes Amrita himself. Gobta tags along. Rimuru knows it is probably a trap and plans to counter it. That sentence is Season 4 Rimuru: he is done being surprised by mail.

Guns and a gate

The party leaves: Rimuru, Shion, Milim, Gobta, magic guns, Kagali plus explorers. A gateway dumps them in Distave. Elves greet them. Granville wonders if Yuuki is trustworthy. Maribel still thinks Greed can hold a Demon Lord. Kagali wanting Amrita too is the Clayman leftover overlapping the Rosso ambush. Too many expeditions, one hole.

Split the dragon girl

The “return Milim’s thing” plan is the ugliest groundwork: isolate the strongest friend before you try Greed on the slime. Whether that object does what they hope is for the next fights to show. Publicly, the scheme is on the table. Exact outcomes are not a recap’s job to invent past the episode.

Arrive smiling

Elves, a castle that was Clayman’s, a ruin under it. The groundwork is done. Investigating the Ruins is the next title because they walked in on purpose. That is either confidence or bait. In this series it is both.

Story Analysis

Heist briefing energy. Comedy is Gobta packing for a legendary ruin. Tension is Rimuru saying the word trap out loud. Glenda’s org chart is the lore dump. Pacing is villain parlor, Tempest dinner, teleport.

World-building is Amrita as an ancient site under Clayman’s domain, Blood Shadow as Rosso wetwork, magic guns as Tempest export hardware, and gate travel as Rimuru skipping the road. Distave’s elves are the local population the next episode will ask you to care about. Keep the reactor in the rumor column until they find it or do not.

Character Analysis

Rimuru is the guy who RSVPs to ambushes. Milim is the friend they want to peel off. Shion and Gobta are the trip muscle/comedy. Kagali is the ruins specialist with her own team. Glenda is the new intelligence officer. Souei is on Elder watch, not in the hole. Yuuki is the smiling co-author. Maribel is Greed with a schedule. Johann thinks Glenda is a martyr. Granville distrusts his own partner-in-crime. Ranga is in orbit for the next fight even if the gate scene is the humans-plus-Milim postcard.

World Building

Distave is Clayman’s leftover geography with elves still living there. Amrita is underneath, rumored to hold a reactor. Blood Shadow is a named Rosso organ. Magic firearms exist as Tempest kit. Spatial gates can skip a warpath. Returning a Demon Lord’s personal effect is a recognized social lever. Five Elders can mis-report Glenda’s status and believe it. Ruins are now a multi-faction tourist trap with kill teams attached.

Nothing here is later-arc homework. If a name or rule is only teased, it stays a tease.

Animation

Meetings, a new hall, a gate FX, elf greeting. No dragon yet. Make the gateway the visual. Distave should not look like Tempest. A travel-week look. Keep Blood Shadow as a name with menace, not a full army reveal if the episode does not show one.

Kagex animation score for this episode: 8.2 / 10 — peaks vs average cuts, not a sakuga clip ranking.

Music and Voice Acting

Score 8.2. 8bit’s TV mix leans on Elements Garden sting + silence. Japanese track is the reference for Rimuru’s dual register (cute slime vs office-brain). Dub timing varies by season; don’t wait on it to judge the episode.

Hidden Details

  • Rimuru saying he will counter the trap is the Greed fight’s thesis in a packing scene.
  • Yuuki’s Milim object is a wedge, not a kindness.
  • Souei staying on Elders is how Tempest does two fronts without Rimuru cloning himself.

Best Moments

  • Glenda briefing the people who used to own her curse.
  • Gobta volunteering for a legendary ruin like it is a field trip.
  • A gate dropping a picnic party on Distave.

Pros & Cons

Pros: Specific to “The Groundwork of Greed” —

The packing episode for Greed’s field test. Watch it for Blood Shadow, the reactor rumor, and Rimuru walking in with his eyes open.

Cons: Requires earlier episodes. Viewers who only want climax fights may call the political / logistics scenes slow even when they are load-bearing.

Final Verdict

Kagex overall: 8.5 / 10

The packing episode for Greed’s field test. Watch it for Blood Shadow, the reactor rumor, and Rimuru walking in with his eyes open.

  • Story: 8.5
  • Characters: 8.5
  • Animation: 8.2
  • Music: 8.2
  • Enjoyment: 8.4

I like Rimuru announcing the trap. Glenda’s briefing is juicy. The gate-to-elves arrival feels like the calm that does not survive contact with a title called Investigating the Ruins.

What to Expect Next

A city under a cave, a mural, golems, and a dragon Milim already knows too well.
