If you only remember one face from Your Name, it’s usually Mitsuha Miyamizu — the Itomori high-schooler who wants out of shrine-town life and wakes up, somehow, living a Tokyo boy’s day. This guide covers who she is before the comet talk, how the body-swap comedy works on her personality, and where spoilers start.

Who is Mitsuha?

Mitsuha lives in the fictional town of Itomori with her younger sister Yotsuha and grandmother Hitoha, carrying Miyamizu Shrine duties she half-resents and half-owns. Classmates Sayaka Natori and Katsuhiko “Teshi” Teshigawara keep her grounded in ordinary school noise — which matters later, because the film needs her friendships to feel real before it asks them to help save a town.

Her father Toshiki is the mayor and emotionally distant from shrine tradition; that family fracture is not flavor text. It’s why “leaving Itomori” is both a teenage mood and a specific wound. When swaps begin with Taki Tachibana, Mitsuha’s curiosity about Tokyo isn’t tourism — it’s the first time her “somewhere else” wish has receipts.

Voice work sells the handoff: Mone Kamishiraishi (JP) and Stephanie Sheh (EN) keep Mitsuha recognizable even when “she” is piloting Taki’s body — bolder at the Italian restaurant, awkward at school, still clearly her decision-making.

Personality

Mitsuha is outgoing with friends, blunt about small-town politics, and game for festival ritual even while complaining. She’s not a pure “soft heroine”: she leaves notes, tests rules, and uses Taki’s life as both playground and research. That mix — playful plus responsible — is why the early reels stay funny instead of mean.

Under stress she plans. The film’s second half only works because Mitsuha can switch from body-swap chaos to logistics with people who already trust her. If you’re ranking Shinkai leads, she’s closer to “active agent” than “pretty symbol waiting to be saved.”

Powers & skills

No battle aura — her “kit” is shrine literacy and social courage. Miyamizu practices around musubi (threads, knots, connection) and kuchikamizake are plot tools, not cosplay. She also adapts fast: phones, trains, restaurant shifts, gendered panic, then later crisis coordination.

Spoiler-light: the swaps themselves are the supernatural hook; Mitsuha’s contribution is how she uses them. Heavy comet / timeline details live on the Fact and Spoilers page.

Role in the story

Mitsuha is half the film’s engine: without her wanting more than Itomori, the body-swap romance has nowhere to go. With her, Tokyo becomes a wish with a face — and Itomori becomes a place worth fighting for, not just leaving.

Spoilers deeper than that (comet strike, timeline gap, late search) belong after you’ve watched, or inside the gated sections of the film review and facts tab. This page stays character-first so you can click from a cast list without a full plot dump.

Best moments

Rewatch for the scenes where Mitsuha makes the “other life” feel supervised — restaurant, classroom, shrine household, or cameo recognition. Those beats are short on purpose; Your Name spends its runtime on Mitsuha/Taki and trusts the ensemble to flash authenticity.

If a moment stuck for you, drop it in the comments — character pages stay useful when readers tag the exact beat.

FAQ

Do I need other Shinkai films before Mitsuha?

No. Optional shared-universe cameos (like Yukari Yukino) are Easter eggs, not homework.

Is Mitsuha a main character?

Yes — one of the two leads.
